Former Tripura MLA Rita Kar Majumder passed away on Thursday at South Tripura district hospital in Santirbazar due to kidney-related complications. She was 54. She is survived by her husband, a daughter and a son. CPI-M Tripura State Committee expressed deep shock at the demise of Majumder.

 

Rita Kar Majumder was elected as an MLA from Sabroom Assembly constituency twice in 2008 and 2013. She joined  Left movement during the student life and obtained Party membership in 1987. Untill her death, she was a member of South Tripura CPI-M district Committee and State Committee member of All India Democratic Women’s Association.

 

Majumder was introduced to Left politics while she was a student. Later, she continued her political career and prior to becoming an MLA was elected as the chairperson of Sabroom Nagar Panchayat. She was elected as MLA from the Sabroom constituency in the year of 2008 for the first time and continued in the office for two terms.

 

The former MLA was suffering from kidney related complications for a long time. She was shifted to Santirbazar District hospital for dialysis and breathed her last there today evening.

 

However, people cutting across the party lines, condoled her untimely demise. Leader of the opposition Manik Sarkar expressed his condolences to the bereaved family of the former legislator. Sitting BJP MLA of Sabroom Shankar Roy also expressed his condolences and said, “She was a strong politician”.
