The Leftists of Tripura expressed concern over the possibility of conducting free and fair by-polls and demanded intervention of the Chief Electoral Officer as well as placed a 7-point charter of demand including deployment of Central forces in adequate numbers in the four constituencies where by-polls will be held on June 23 next.

Two days before the last day of the poll campaign for the ensuing by-elections to the four assembly constituencies in Tripura, the State unit of the Left front on Sunday expressed concern over free and fair polls and sought the intervention of the Chief Electoral Officer.

Addressing a press conference here at the party office in Agartala the Left front convener and former MP Narayan Kar accused the ruling BJP party of adopting terror tactics across the state and pressed for 7-point charter of demands with the CEO Kiran Gitte on Sunday.

A delegation of the Left front committee comprising of Kar and other Left leaders met the CEO in support of their demand of declaring polling booths as ‘hyper sensitive’, deployment of adequate central security forces in all the polling booths during the elections, removal of outsiders from the government bungalows, private lodges and other locations falling under the poll-bound constituencies, prevention of influx of the outsiders inside the polling booths during the time of election on June 23 and others.

“The way the ruling BJP party-backed goons and motorbike-borne miscreants have intensified their terror tactics ahead of the poll, we are really very concerned of free and fair elections this time too,” Kar alleged.

The Left front leader further alleged that the state witnessed violation of the model of conduct of the election commission, terror and violence during the time of polling during the last elections held in the year 2018.

He said, “While we met the CEO with our demands, he had assured us of making all necessary arrangements for conducting the election in a free and fair manner.”
