In the northeastern state of Tripura, a young horticulturist is making waves with his dedication to preserving medicinal plants and cultivating exotic fruits. He is Bikramjit Chakma – a 32-year-old who has become a role model for many farmers in his area, and an inspiration to those who seek to make a difference in their communities.
His dedication and hard work have not gone unnoticed. On July 25, 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recognized his efforts in his popular radio program Mann ki Baat.
“Bikramjit Chakma has not only earned a lot of profit by starting Ber cultivation but is also motivating people to do this,” Modi said, praising Chakma’s contribution to the community.
What sets Chakma apart is not just his passion for horticulture but his ability to inspire others. He has been sharing his knowledge with farmers in and around his village, helping them cultivate exotic fruits and increase their profits.
His love for horticulture started early, and he quickly realized that Tripura’s proximity to the international border made it an ideal location for growing and exporting exotic fruits. He started with the Ber fruit, a popular choice among locals, and soon found himself in the national spotlight for his achievements.
The success of Chakma has grabbed the attention of the State government. They have provided him with financial support to encourage his initiative, and about 75% of the Apple Ber crop in Tripura is now being cultivated under his technical guidance. The state government has also set up special nurseries to help people like Chakma increase their yields and meet the growing demand for exotic fruits.
Chakma’s message to the people of Tripura is clear: fruit cultivation can be a profitable venture, and everyone should take advantage of the area’s favorable weather and climate. His dedication to promoting horticulture as a means of creating a greener, more prosperous Tripura serves as an inspiration to us all.
As for Chakma, he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. His future goals include expanding his garden and growing Dragon Fruit, a popular choice among health-conscious consumers. With his unwavering passion and commitment, there is no doubt that Chakma will continue to inspire a green revolution in Tripura for years to come. (With inputs from PIB)
