Security personnel faced the fury of womenfolk during an Anti-Ganja raid at Uttar Maharani under Kalyanpur on Friday.
Acting on a tip-off, Police forces led SDPO Sonacharan Tripura along with jawans of CRPF 71 bn and TSR went to the deep forest of Diwan Sardar and Adhunia villages in Uttar Maharani. The security personnel found ganja plantations in around 2.5 Kani land and started destroying ganja saplings. Meanwhile, a group of women belonging to indigenous communities chased towards the security personnel. Armed with takkal (indigenous machete), sticks and machete, the women vented anger at the police and prevented ganja sapling destruction.
In the face of resistance by furious and armed women, Police, instead of confrontation, preferred to retreat. However, another group of women emerged from the jungles and blocked the path of the Police. Fiercely protesting against ganja raids, they poured kerosene on the wheels of the SDPOs vehicle and attempted to set it ablaze.
After a scuffle between the angry womenfolk and Women Police, the latter was able to snatch Kerosene drum from the agitating women and refrained them from setting the Police vehicle afire. During the scuffle, kerosene was splashed on the Police personnel. However, before the situation took an ugly turn, Police managed to bring the situation under control.
Speaking to the media, Sonacharan Jamatia said, there were reports of thriving ganja cultivation in the deep forests of remote villages. Accordingly, we received secret information that mentioned ganja cultivation at Diwan Sardar Para area. Security personnel were successful in destroying ganja plantation in 2.5 kani lands before the womenfolk attempted to resist the police, the SDPO said.
