The Government of Tripura proposed to the Airport Authority of India (AAI) to construct a ‘Greenfield Airport’ in Kailashahar. The State Government also urged a re-survey of the proposed site by the Airport Authority.
In reply to a question raised at the Assembly during recently concluded Budget Session, Minister-in-charge of the Transport Department Pranajit Singha Roy said, the Government has taken steps restart the long defunct Kailashahar Airport.
“A proposal for resuming activities at Kailashahar Airport was sent to the Central Government and the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) included Kailashahar Airport under RCS-UDAN Scheme”, the Minister said and added that the Airport could not be restarted as no Airlines took part in the ‘bidding’ floated by the MoCA.
Meantime, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb wrote a letter to the Minister of the Civil Aviation Ministry and urged him to construct a Greenfield Airport at Kailashahar.
To this end, the State Government informed the Airport Authority of India that the State Government had identified 397.01 Acre Khas land at Hirachhara in Kailashahar. Accordingly an inspection team of Airport Authority of India visited the site.
However, as some anomalies were found in their primary report, the State Government urged the Airport Authority of India, once again on February 23, 2022 to re-inspect the proposed site for the construction of the Greenfield Airport at Kailashahar.
Also, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb also wrote another letter on February 28, 2022 to the Minister of the Civil Aviation Ministry requesting him for conducting survey again for constructing the Greenfield Airport there.
