In all probability, for the first time in recent history of Tripura, Left Front and Congress held a rally and public meeting under the banner of the ‘Nagarik Forum’.
The rally and meeting was held in Udaipur under Sepahijala in Tripura on Monday (Jan 16).
The rally was held today demanding ‘ restoration of democracy’ and other issues.
Recently, leaders of the CPIM and Congress met in Agartala and announced the alliance between the two parties in Tripura against the ruling BJP.
In today’s rally, five Leftist organizations and Congress under the ‘Nagarik Forum’ brought out a rally from Jamjuri in Udaipur and roamed around the town.
The rally ended at Jamtala and a public meeting was held in which several Left Front leaders including CPIM MLA Ratan Bhowmik, former CPIM Minister Naresh Jamatia, Congress leader Tital Pal and others were present.
Addressing the gathering leaders of the Forum demanded the restoration of democracy, impartial role of the civil and police administrations, protection of democratic rights of the voters etc.
Leftist and Congress leaders criticized the incumbent government for ‘attacks’ on the Opposition party workers across the State.
Alleging that democracy is in stake in Tripura, they urged people to come forward against the prevailing political situation in the State.
The Leftist and Congress leaders also alleged miscreants backed by the ruling party intimidated the supporters and attempted to disrupt the rally of the Nagarik Forum – but, the miscreants backtracked after Forum activists resisted the attempt.
It was also reported that a group of Forum supporters faced resistance while returning after the programme. The supporters gheraoed the RK Pur Police Station and later Police intervened.
The situation became tensed in Udaipur Town after some miscreants threw a bomb at the Congress Bhawan there. Police rushed to the site. Situation was stated to be under control till the last available information.
