In a display of solidarity, people belonging to Manipuri community residing in Tripura organized a candlelight demonstration and demanded restoration of peace and normalcy in their ethnic unrest hit home state.

The demonstration, held in Agartala on Sunday, saw thousands of men and women of Manipuri community gathering to condemn the ongoing ethnic violence that has plagued Manipur since May 3.

With placards and banners in hand, the demonstrators expressed their support for the victims and families affected by the senseless killings and violence.

The demonstrators called upon both the state and Central governments to take immediate action and implement necessary measures to end the killings of innocent people and restore peace in Manipur.

Additionally, they urged civil society organizations of Manipur to play a constructive role during this crisis.

Holding candles in their hands, men and women strongly emphasized the need for harmonious coexistence of all communities and harkening back to the peaceful cohabitation witnessed in the past.

Slogans such as “no separate administration” and “save territorial integrity of Manipur” were written in the placards. They reiterated their strong commitment to unity and preservation of Manipur’s cultural and political identity.

The candlelight demonstration was jointly organized by the Puthiba Welfare and Cultural Society and the All Tripura Meitei Community. The demonstration reflected the collective effort and solidarity of the Manipuri community in Tripura.

The event saw participation from Manipuri individuals residing in Tripura for educational, professional, and other purposes.

Tripura has been home to approximately 30,000 Manipuri residents, predominantly from the Meitei (Meetei) community, for several decades.

As the echoes of their chants and pleas for peace filled the air, the candlelight demonstration showcased the common people’s desire for peace and their unwavering hope for a better future in Manipur.
