If architecture is a frozen music, as Goethe had once said, then amidst the greenery and sprawling field sands erect ‘ Integrated terminal building of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport’ as an awe inspiring fusion of classical, modern and folk music – the music that should be ‘felt’ with a splash of contemporary narrative and imperatives.
As part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s endeavour to provide improved connectivity to the northeast region, the new integrated terminal building of Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport has taken its final shape with all world-class modern facilities- these imperatives – environmental protection, state of the art technological support system and aesthetic display of local culture and heritage in various forms for the global travellers were evidently given the highest importance.
It is indeed a new experience.
Built at a cost of Rs. 450 crore on 30,000 sq. metres area, the new terminal showcased the combination of local art, culture and heritage as well as focused on promoting Tripura’s important tourist spots including Chabimura and Unakoti. Local bamboo art has been presented in multiple forms at the airport.
According to a tweet from the official handle of Airports Authority of India, the new terminal building will be fully operated on solar power from April 2022 during day time. A 2-MW solar power plant is already under construction.
The second busiest airport in the North Eastern Region, the MBB airport Agartala is now ready for operation with enhanced capacity of handling 1200 domestic and international passengers during peak hours. The new airport is supported by the latest IT network integrated system.
The other facilities installed in the airport included 20 check-in counters, six parking bays (all power in & push back), four-passenger boarding bridges, conveyor belts, in-line baggage system(ILBS), Escalators and Lifts etc.
