The elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District councils are likely to be held in February and preparations centering the polls have been already at the peak.
Sources in the state administration said, there are ample possibilities of holding the polls in February next with the announcement for the elections scheduled in January.
Taking these tentative dates in mind, all the political parties are gearing up to improve their grip in the hills and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party emerges as the front runner in the race.
BJP Janajati Morcha chief and sitting MP from the East Tripura constituency Rebati Tripura said, “we are expecting to have senior leaders of the BJP including central observer Vinod Sonkar in the state in the beginning of the new year to discuss the election strategies. Apart from that, the Morcha chiefs are also coming here in the state one by one as per their scheduled visit to ensure that the party continues to get strengthened in the state”.
The MP, who played a pivotal role in bringing leaders of opposition parties and ally IPFT into BJP, also said, “a team of senior leaders will also arrive here in Tripura. All these visits are scheduled in the month of January hopefully to give the party a new start after a long gap due to the Covid 19 pandemic”.
However, sources in the BJP Janajati Morcha also said, the party is confident enough to fight the polls alone since the party’s stakes only get strengthened if the party goes alone in the elections.
“See in the Lok Sabha elections, the IPFT threw a challenge before by fighting the polls alone. We accepted the challenge and proved that they were the fourth party in the four corner contest”, a source said adding, “now if they demand 22 seats, BJP can’t afford to do so. As per our analysis, the BJP is not willing to offer seats more than the figure 10 because there are many areas where IPFT has blatantly failed to retain its stronghold. And, if the BJP goes alone people who are disappointed with the IPFT will repose hope on the lotus”.
Rubbishing the ongoing murmurs in the political circles regarding the Pradyot Kishore Debbarman’s proximity with the BJP, the source said, there are proposals being made from different people to forge an alliance with IPFT and INPT-TIPRA duo but the BJP does not think that it has so weak organization in the TTAADC that it require support from parties like INPT and for that matter a ignorable entity like TIPRA.
