Pradyot, Sarma Slam Bangladesh Call to Isolate Northeast

Agartala/Guwahati, Dec 17:
Strong reactions have emerged from leaders in India’s Northeast after a senior Bangladeshi politician made controversial remarks about the region, triggering concerns over sovereignty and regional security.

TIPRA Motha Party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma expressed deep concern over the statement made by National Citizen Party (NCP) leader Hasnat Abdullah.

The NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah’s comments on cutting off the 7 sisters are distressing and inflammatory. I request the government of India to provide us a day’s time to demonstrate the sentiments of Northeast Indians towards Bangladeshis.

In a post on social media, Debbarma said the comments about cutting off the seven northeastern states were disturbing and provocative.

He described the remarks as harmful and capable of inflaming tensions. Debbarma urged the Government of India to allow a day for people of the Northeast to openly express their sentiments on the issue involving Bangladesh.

Abdullah had reportedly said that Bangladesh should isolate India’s northeastern region. He also claimed that support should be extended to separatist groups if India tried to destabilise Bangladesh.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also strongly criticised the repeated such statements coming from Bangladesh about India’s Northeast.

Reacting to Hasnat Abdullah’s statement, Sarma said some leaders across the border have repeatedly made provocative remarks over the past year. He stated that these comments directly challenge the territorial integrity of India’s Northeast.

Speaking to reporters in Lumding, Sarma said these remarks crossed all diplomatic limits. He warned that such statements pose a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.

The Chief Minister said similar comments have been made repeatedly over the last year. He said these statements call for the separation of Northeast India and its merger with Bangladesh. He described them as reckless and dangerous.

Sarma’s response also comes in the context of an earlier remark by Bangladesh’s interim government chief Muhammad Yunus.

Yunus had described India’s Northeast as a “deadlock region,” which had sparked sharp reactions across India.

Political leaders from different parties had strongly objected to Yunus’s comment. They accused him of questioning India’s sovereignty and promoting divisive narratives about a sensitive region.

Sarma reaffirmed that the Northeast is an inseparable part of India. He said the region has seen major progress in development, connectivity and peace in recent years.

He added that any attempt to question India’s territorial unity or promote separatism would be dealt with firmly.

The Assam Chief Minister also said that India supports peaceful coexistence and good relations with neighbouring countries. However, he made it clear that any rhetoric threatening national unity or regional security would invite a strong response.

Meanwhile, Pradyot Kishore-led TMP is vocal against statements coming from across the border and urged the Government to take stance to stop making such statements. (With inputs from IANS)
