Among those honoured was Tripura’s noted bamboo artisan Samir Jamatia, whose work represented the rich bamboo craftsmanship traditions of the state.

The interaction highlighted the growing national recognition of indigenous art forms and traditional craftsmanship from North East India.

It also reflected the Government of India’s continued effort to promote regional artisans on major national platforms.

Artisans Contributed to Republic Day Invitation Kit

The prestigious project was jointly undertaken by the National Institute of Design and the President’s Secretariat.

The initiative involved designing and producing the official Invitation Kit for Republic Day at Home 2026 held on January 26 this year.

Officials said the invitation kit reflected India’s cultural diversity while placing special emphasis on the traditions, craftsmanship, and indigenous artistic heritage of the North Eastern region.

Artisans and weavers from different North Eastern states played a major role in crafting the invitation kit and presenting the region’s artistic identity during the Republic Day ‘At Home’ Reception.

Samir Jamatia Shares His Experience

Speaking about the occasion, Samir Jamatia described the interaction with President Murmu as a proud and memorable experience. He said he received a white shawl as a mark of honour and recognition during the meeting.

The delegation also received a guided tour of Rashtrapati Bhavan after the interaction.

Sources said President Murmu personally expressed her desire to meet the artisans and cultural contributors after appreciating their efforts in successfully showcasing North East India’s cultural richness during the Republic Day celebrations.

As part of the recognition programme, the delegation, including Samir Jamatia, visited New Delhi on May 19 for discussions at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

National Recognition for Indigenous Art and Bamboo Craft

The recognition has generated enthusiasm among artisan communities in Tripura and other North Eastern states. Bamboo craftsmanship remains an important part of Tripura’s cultural identity and rural economy.

Experts believe such national-level recognition can create wider opportunities for local artisans, handloom workers, and bamboo craftsmen. It can also strengthen awareness about indigenous art forms among younger generations.

Cultural observers noted that involving traditional artisans in prestigious national projects not only preserves heritage but also connects local craftsmanship with contemporary design initiatives.
