The Government of Tripura directed all the Anganwadi Centers (AWCs) under the Integrated Child Development Project (ICDS) in the State to remain closed from April 19 to April 23 next. The decision came up, a day after the Government announced the suspension of classes in Government and government-aided schools in the State from Tuesday (April 18).

Even as the AWCs will remain closed, the distribution of items under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) will continue and beneficiaries will not be deprived of the SNP facilities.

As the ongoing severe heat wave continues to disrupt normal life in Tripura, the State Government issued a notification asking the AWCs to remain closed for the next five days from April 19 to April 23 next.

To ensure that beneficiaries get the benefits under the SNP, the notification issued by the Additional Secretary to the Government of Tripura mentioned, “Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) foods items and nutrition are to be distributed for the closing periods at the doorsteps of beneficiaries viz. children (6 months to 6 years), Pregnant Women and Lactating Mothers, not in the form of Hot Cook Meal but as Take Home Ration during Home Visit. Beneficiaries will not attend the Anganwadis”.

The Additional Secretary to the Government of Tripura also directed all District Magistrates to take necessary preventive steps to save people from Sunburn, Sun Stroke and other heat wave-related health issues.

The memo addressed to the DMs mentioned, “You are aware that Heat Wave, Sun Stroke and Sun Burn have been identified as the State Specific Disasters in Tripura.”

The memo directed the DMs to take necessary steps to manage these disasters by conducting extensive awareness campaigns through various media platforms.

They have also been asked to activate the Emergency Operation Centres, Quick Response Teams and resources, and ensure uninterrupted power supply to all areas and take support from other key agencies as and when required for the safety and security of the citizens of the State.

Furthermore, the memo instructed the DMs to stay ready with Emergency Operation Centres, Quick Response Teams, and available resources. It also urged them to ensure uninterrupted power supply to all areas and seek assistance from other key agencies when required to ensure the safety and security of the citizens of the State during the ongoing heat spell.
