A delegation representing the ‘Security Audit Team’ of the Indian Government recently conducted a visit to the Integrated Check Posts in Sabroom and Belonia Muhurighat under South Tripura district.
The purpose of this visit was to assess the operational efficiency and security measures in place at these locations.
Headed by Additional Secretary (IRS) Vinayak Azad, the delegation consisted of various government officials including Sami Ahmed Khan, Deputy Secretary (NH IDCL), Sanjib Sharma, Regional Officer (NH IDCL), Harpit Singh, Joint Director (Ministry of Development North East), Debashish Nandi, Manager of Tripura division of Land Port Authority of India, and ex-MLA Sankar Roy.
During their inspection of the Sabroom Integrated Check Post, the delegation primarily focused on evaluating the security aspects of the facility. Their objective was to assess the effectiveness of the implemented security systems and services at the land port.
Vinayak Azad addressed inquiries from journalists and emphasized that their assessment encompassed the security infrastructure at various points along the India-Bangladesh border.
Debashish Nandi, the Manager of Tripura division of the Land Port Authority of India, mentioned that in 2018, the Land Port of India acquired 54 acres of land in Sabroom, and the construction of the Integrated Check Post was about 60% complete.
He said it is expected that the construction work will be finalized by the end of the current year.
In a collaborative meeting, the delegation discussed the final aspects related to the construction of the Integrated Check Post.
Furthermore, the delegation also conducted a separate evaluation of the Belonia Muhurighat border land port.
During this assessment, they focused on reviewing the infrastructure, passenger movements, passport-related procedures, and border security at the facility.
Previously, the land port encountered challenges due to objections from the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB).
However, it has been confirmed that this issue has been resolved through bilateral discussions between India and Bangladesh.
These inspections conducted by the Security Audit Team form a crucial part of the Indian Government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen security measures and enhance efficiency at land ports along the India-Bangladesh border.
The objective of these visits is to identify any vulnerabilities and effectively address them, ensuring smooth operations and secure border crossings.
According to reliable sources, these inspections play a vital role in promoting bilateral trade, facilitating people-to-people exchanges, and fostering friendly relations between India and Bangladesh.
The ongoing construction work and security assessments exemplify the commitment of both nations to enhance connectivity and cooperation in the region.
