Security forces have successfully carried out anti-drug operations resulting in the seizure of substantial quantities of heroin with an estimated value of Rs 15.59 crore. The operations took place over the past 24 hours in Mizoram and Tripura, according to official sources on Wednesday.
In a collaborative effort between the police and Assam Rifles in Tripura, three individuals were apprehended during a joint operation. The operation took place on Tuesday night in Kumarghat, located in Unakoti district. The suspects, all of whom were youths, were found in possession of 558 grams of heroin. They were travelling in a car from southern Assam. They hail from West Tripura and Sepehijala districts. The confiscated heroin holds an estimated value of Rs 2.25 crore.
Meanwhile, officials from the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department conducted operations in different locations near Aizawl. These operations led to the seizure of approximately 3,310 grams of heroin valued at Rs 13.34 crore. Four individuals were apprehended during the course of these operations.
The suspects, aged between 25 and 40 years, are residents of the Karimganj and Cachar districts in southern Assam.
Preliminary investigations conducted by both Mizoram and Tripura police reveal that the origins of these illegal drugs trace back to Myanmar.
It is believed that the drugs were smuggled into the region and subsequently transported through Mizoram to other parts of the country.
Tripura shares an 856 km border with Bangladesh, while Mizoram’s frontier with Myanmar spans 510 km, making the regions vulnerable to such activities.
The porous nature of these borders also facilitates the smuggling of other contraband items. Along with narcotics, items such as foreign cigarettes, gold, arms, ammunition, exotic animals, and areca nuts are frequently smuggled from Myanmar into northeastern states, notably Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur. Authorities are working to curb these illegal activities and enhance border security to prevent such incidents. (Edited)
