Agartala: A few years ago, Tripura struggled with significant transmission and commercial losses in its electricity network. Today, the northeastern state is being recognized for its rapid transformation in the power sector.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced that Tripura has become one of the country’s leading states in smart metering implementation. More than 3.55 lakh consumers have already been brought under the smart meter network. The remaining consumers are expected to be covered by October this year.
The Minister shared the update after a review meeting attended by Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister Manik Saha, and senior officials in Agartala.
The state’s progress reflects a broader effort to modernize power infrastructure, improve billing efficiency, and reduce electricity losses.
Smart Meter Rollout Nears Completion
The smart metering initiative has emerged as one of the most significant reforms in Tripura’s power sector.
The state has already equipped all 11 KV feeders and distribution transformers with smart meters, officials said. The rollout is progressing rapidly in both urban and rural areas.
The government aims to achieve complete consumer coverage within the next few months.
Nath said Tripura has become the first state in India to implement prepaid electricity metering on such a large scale.
ADB-Funded Project Reaches Final Stage
The Asian Development Bank-supported power distribution strengthening project has reached 95 percent completion.
Officials expect the remaining work to conclude by June. The project focuses on improving power distribution infrastructure, reducing technical losses, and strengthening the electricity network.
The initiative forms part of the state’s broader strategy to create a reliable and efficient power system.
The Minister also noted that authorities have already completed nearly 95 percent of the loss-reduction works under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). They plan to complete the remaining projects by July.
Significant Drop in Power Losses
One of the biggest achievements highlighted during the review meeting was the reduction in Aggregate Technical and Commercial (AT&C) losses.
The state’s AT&C losses stood at nearly 40 percent in 2018. Today, the figure has dropped to 18.23 percent.
Officials attribute this improvement to infrastructure upgrades, smart metering, improved monitoring systems, and financial support from the Central Government.
The reduction is likely to improve revenue collection while ensuring better service delivery to consumers.
Meeting Growing Electricity Demand
Tripura’s electricity demand continues to rise as economic activities expand.
The state currently records a peak power demand of 542 MW. Out of this, 365 MW is available within the state. The remaining requirement is sourced from the national power market.
The Minister said inadequate natural gas supply remains a challenge for local power generation.
Major Upgrade Planned for Rukhia Power Plant
Tripura is also focusing on increasing its power generation capacity.
The state government, with financial support from the Asian Development Bank, plans to upgrade the existing 63 MW open-cycle gas turbine plant at Rukhia into a 120 MW combined-cycle gas turbine project.
The proposed project carries an estimated investment of Rs 1,320 crore.
Once completed in March 2029, the upgraded facility is expected to substantially strengthen the state’s energy security and reduce dependence on external power purchases.
Renewable Energy Push Gains Momentum
Alongside conventional power projects, Tripura is accelerating its renewable energy transition.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, rooftop solar installations with a combined capacity of 12.11 MW have already been commissioned.
The state government has set a long-term target of achieving 150 MW of rooftop solar capacity.
Officials believe solar expansion will help diversify the state’s energy mix and reduce pressure on conventional power sources.
Tribal Development Schemes Near Completion
The Minister also reviewed progress under key tribal welfare initiatives.
Works under the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM-JANMAN) have already been completed.
Meanwhile, projects under the Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Abhiyan (DA-JGUA) have reached nearly 90 percent completion and are expected to conclude this month.

These projects aim to strengthen infrastructure and improve living conditions in tribal-dominated areas across Tripura.
What This Means for Tripura
The rapid rollout of smart meters, reduction in power losses, strengthening of distribution networks, and expansion of renewable energy capacity are reshaping Tripura’s power sector.
As the state moves toward complete smart meter coverage, it is emerging as a model for other regions seeking to modernize electricity distribution systems.
The combination of technology-driven reforms and infrastructure investments could help Tripura achieve greater energy efficiency, financial sustainability, and long-term power security.
