Spotlight on Young Journalists: Agartala Press Club Holds Annual Awards Ceremony
Agartala Dec 15: The Agartala Press Club’s annual awards ceremony on Sunday turned into a celebration of emerging journalistic talent, as young reporters were recognised alongside senior media professionals for their contributions to the profession.
Held at the club premises on December 14, the event brought together founding members, veteran editors and a strong presence of early-career journalists, underscoring the growing role of youth in shaping Tripura’s media landscape. The programme commenced at 5 pm and reflected a sense of unity across generations within the journalism fraternity.
Tripura Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy graced the occasion as chief guest, while Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder attended as special guest. Several prominent personalities, including Press Club founder member Satyabrata Chakraborty, senior editor Subal Kumar Dey, vice-president Chitra Roy and MBB University Registrar Sumanta Chakraborty, were also present. The ceremony was chaired by Press Club president Pranab Sarkar.
During the function, the Amiya Deb Ray Memorial Award and the Hiranmay Chakraborty Memorial Awards for 2024 and 2025 were formally presented, along with prizes for winners of sports events organised by the Press Club.
While senior journalists were honoured for lifetime achievements, the spotlight remained firmly on young professionals making their mark in the field. Chandrima Sarkar and Mrinal Kanti Banik were conferred the Hiranmay Chakraborty Memorial Award in recognition of their professional excellence, marking a significant milestone in their journalism careers.
The awards were handed over by Minister Tinku Roy and other dignitaries, who praised the commitment and evolving skills of young journalists navigating a rapidly changing media environment.
Speaking at the event, Minister Roy highlighted how journalism has expanded beyond geographical boundaries in the digital age. He said the perception of a shrinking media market was misleading, as online platforms have opened global access to readers. Emphasizing adaptability, he urged journalists—especially the younger generation—to embrace digital tools and think beyond local limitations.
Veteran editor Subal Kumar Dey and Press Club founder member Satyabrata Chakraborty recalled the lasting contributions of late journalists Amiya Deb Ray and Hiranmay Chakraborty. They also shared insights on the growth of journalism in Tripura, offering guidance and inspiration to young reporters entering the profession.
Agartala Press Club secretary Ramakanta Dey delivered the welcome address, while president Pranab Sarkar concluded the programme with a vote of thanks.

On the sidelines of the event, Minister Roy also spoke about the state government’s plans to bring talented sportspersons back to Tripura. He said a new policy is being prepared to encourage athletes currently representing other states to return and compete for Tripura.
Additionally, the Minister informed that the state government has launched a social welfare scheme providing a monthly pension of Rs 5,000 to mentally challenged Divyangjan, reaffirming its commitment to inclusive development.
The ceremony concluded on a note of optimism, with young journalists drawing motivation from both recognition and mentorship, signalling a promising future for journalism in Tripura.
