Transport Minister of Tripura Sushanta Chowdhury took part in a high-level meeting New Delhi on Monday. Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways Nitin Gadkari chaired the meeting in which Ministers for Transport from 15 States and Union Territories (UTs) including Tripura participated.
The meeting was important in a sense that meeting was held to discuss in detail various transport-related issues as well as finding new and innovative solutions to solve the issues through mutual cooperation and consultation.
Nitin Gadkari discussed in detail the various initiatives taken by MoRTH and requested active support from the State and UT authorities for their effective implementation.
He said, “Discussed a variety of concurrent policy matters including review of road traffic regulations, setting up of vehicle fitness stations, financing E-Buses, and streamlining the issuance of driving licenses”.
Ministers of Transport from State and Union Territories supported and appreciated the initiatives taken by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. They also spoke about various initiatives taken by the States/ UTs authorities and provided their suggestions and inputs for further strengthening the policies and strategies for the transformation of the road transport sector.
Later, in his social media post, Sushanta Chowdhury said, “With the progress in technology, the meeting discussed developing future-ready road transport. The main driving force behind this move is security and sustainability”.
Chowdhury also said, several initiatives for road safety such as road safety audits and remedial/corrective measures, provision of safety features in vehicles, electronic monitoring and enforcement, setting up of driver training institutes, rules on pedestrian safety, Voluntary Vehicle-Fleet Modernization Program (V-VMP) scrapped vehicles, were discussed.
A PIB press release mentioned, “An important point of discussion was related to strengthening the procedure for issuance of learner’s license. It was suggested to provide greater emphasis on driver education to create awareness about road traffic rules and responsible driving behaviour. Discussions were held on having online tutorials on road safety as a prerequisite for a learner’s license, and States/UTs were encouraged to implement such tutorials expeditiously”.
Notably, Sushanta Chowdhury while inaugurating an “Institute of Driving Training and Research” under the management of the Transport Department of Tripura at Jirania in West Tripura District a few days ago underscored the importance of training for drivers.
About today’s meeting, Chowdhury said, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari promised to improve the road and communication system of North East India.
