In the History of Tripura, there is no place for a narrow mindset. Tripura’s history and culture are the most fundamental wealth of the State. Let us enrich it, said former Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, a member of the Tripura Royal family, Jishnu Dev Varma.

During an event commemorating the birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram at Rabindra Bhawan on Saturday, Jishnu Dev Varma shared insights into the historically significant journey of Tripura, urging attendees to draw inspiration from the state’s rich heritage.

Speaking to a captivated audience primarily comprised of the younger generation, Dev Varma conveyed that the history of Tripura had not only inspired esteemed figures like Rabindranath Tagore but also held the potential to inspire everyone. He emphasized the hallmark of greatness, indicating that the kings of Tripura demonstrated a profound vision while leading a simple way of life, a characteristic that garnered immense respect.

Dev Varma highlighted a compelling anecdote that underscored the reverence for the Tripura kings.

He recounted how Radha Kishore Manikya, who constructed the iconic Ujjayanta Palace but resided in a bamboo-made house, received a remarkable welcome at the White House during his visit to the United States. The then American President personally greeted him at the entrance, highlighting the global recognition and regards the Tripura kings had earned, Dev Varma informed the audience.

Discussing the historical documentation of Tripura, Dev Varma pointed out that the narrative was not solely preserved in Rajmala, the traditional historical account of the state. He revealed that the Gazette of Bengal and the writings of Abdul Fazal, a minister during Akbar’s reign, also documented the history of Tripura.

He underscored the intrinsic value of Tripura’s cultural and historical wealth, emphasizing unity over division, a principle consistently upheld by the state’s Kings.

“There is no point in creating a division. None of the kings of the State tried to divide. Our forefathers worked to strengthen every culture. It is now our collective responsibility to cultivate a beautiful – harmonious and vibrant – Tripura where diverse cultures could coexist and flourish.

Drawing parallels between Rabindranath Tagore and the Tripura kings, he highlighted the influential relationship between the renowned poet and the state’s rulers. Tagore’s works celebrated the sacrifices made by the Tripura kings, a sentiment that Dev Varma urged the present generation to embrace.

Dev Varma stressed the importance of rising above narrowness and embracing the inspiration derived from the illustrious history of Tripura’s kings. He implored everyone to contribute to the enrichment of the state’s culture, ensuring a thriving environment where varied traditions thrive in unison.
