Time has changed, the situation of the country has changed – but CPM seems to be clinging to its age-old political strategy of forming a broad-based united platform against the party which is in power – at present against the BJP.
Sitaram Yechury, the All India general secretary of CPM while addressing the gathering of party workers at Agartala Town Hall on the first day of the party’s two-day 23rd state conference of Tripura Unit, stressed the need for evolving a broad-based and united platform of left, secular and democratic forces to counter the BJP which was resorting to “divisive and communal” policies with an aim to establish Hindu Rashtra in the country.
Many people believe that this hinted an alliance or understanding with the Congress in the State like in other States e.g. West Bengal.
Yechury’s predecessors started forming such broad-based platform from the late ‘80s against the ruling party at the Centre – this age-old strategy gave the country a couple of loosely knitted and unstable Coalition governments in the Centre – and over the years, Leftists were routed from its two strongholds West Bengal and Tripura leaving it limited in Kerala only.
“Efforts should be made to build up and strengthen public movements against the ‘fascist’ BJP-led Government which was determined in implementing the RSS agenda in the country,” he said.
Yechury continued and said, “The BJP-led Government had accelerated corporatization since it took the reins for the second time in 2019 and was handing over the properties of the public sector undertakings to the private sector.”
Apart from its pet topic – corporatization, Yechury also mentioned another pair of long-heard words, United States.
“While the rights of working-class were being affected, the BJP government had ‘legalized political corruption. The government at the same time brought forth issues like abrogation of Article 370, Citizenship Amendment Act and other draconian provisions as part of its communal agenda,” adding to this Yechury said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government had turned as junior partner to the United States and is mortgaging the interests of the country.”
