A regional ally of ruling BJP-led coalition government in Tripura, IPFT reiterated to strengthen its organization based on its core demand for separate ‘Tipraland’.
The IPFT leaders are on a sticky wicket in the State after the District Council polls held in 2021 last. The tribal-based party failed to win in a single seat in the Tripura Tribal Area Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) polls and the humiliating defeat at the hands of another regional party pushed the IPFT into a dire situation. Grass root level workers defected to other parties in large number.
In its recently concluded State Level Conference and Central Committee meeting, leaders confessed that the party weakened. In the face of such a crisis situation, the Party failed to come out with a full-fledged State Committee allegedly owing to the inner party differences of opinions.
Newly elected IPFT president Mevar Kumar Jamatia also confessed about the erosion in party’s support base and stressed the need to focus on its separate Tipra Land demand.
Addressing a press meet in Agartala on Wednesday, Jamatia said a delegation of the Party will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss about the demand for Tipra Land.
“We are fighting for Tipra Land for quite a long time. We will rebuild our organization and keep on fighting for our demand. Our party delegation will meet the PM and Union Home Minister to this end”, Mevar Kumar Jamatia said.
There was speculation that IPFT would merge with another party – however, it appears that the Party is planning to rejuvenate its organization and prepare for the upcoming Assembly polls in the next year. If political analysts are correct, IPFT is unlikely to sever ties with its current ally – BJP.
