Highlighting the need for holistic development and the rights of the different tribal groups of the state to be protected, the Tripura Pradesh Adivasi Congress on Monday held a convention at Agartala Muktadhara auditorium.

The leaders of the Adivasi Congress raised the demand to form Development Council for different ethnic groups living in the State. Party leaders also claimed that it was the Congress Party that worked for upliftment of the ethnic communities. The party leaders also denounced the demands for separate Tipra Land and Greater Tipra Land demand.

All India Congress leader and Trpura in-charge Dr. Ajoy Kumar, Szarita Laiphlang, state Congress President Birjit Sinha along with other congress leaders and delegates of 20 ethnic communities were present in the convention. As the Assembly polls are nearing, Congress in Tripura is focusing on rebuilding its organization among indigenous people. Like previous elections in the State, Congress failed to mark its presence in the last TTAADC polls held in 2021.

During the day-long convention, the congress leaders had pitched to form separate development councils for different tribal groups to protect the rights of tribal over forest lands as well as ensure cultural and socio-economic upliftment of every ethnic community. The party also demanded to conduct the village council elections at the earliest.

The congress leaders had slammed the BJP government in Tripura for allocating only Rs 400 crore out of Rs 26000 crore in the State Budget for indigenous people that constitutes 33 per cent of the total population.

The congress leaders on Monday called for strengthening the congress party to form congress government in the upcoming 2023 general assembly elections.

A procession was held here at Agartala where the party leaders and workers including the congress Adivasi workers from different parts of the state had joined and later gathered at Muktadhara auditorium to take part in the convention.
