Former BJP MLA of Surma constituency in Tripura, Ashish Das who joined Trinamool Congress earlier, has announced his decision to quit Trinamool Congress.

The announcement came two days after the Election Commission of India (ECI) declared schedule for by-polls in four Assembly Constituencies in Tripura including Surma from where Ashish Das won in 2018 Assembly polls as a BJP candidate.

Addressing a press conference in Agartala on Friday, Ashish Das criticized the Trinamool leaders and said that he had decided to leave the party.

Sources said, Ashish Das, after, in a rather rhetorical move, severed his tie with the BJP and joined Trinamool Congress last year.

Before joining the Trinamool Congress, Das went to Kolkata and tonsured his head to atone his association with the saffron party.

It was reported that Das was expecting to join Trinamool in presence of its supremo Mamata Banerjee – however, his wish did not materialized and he was received in the Party by Abhishek Banerjee.

Meantime, owing to his defection, Das lost his MLAship paving way for by-poll in his constuency -Surma.

His stint with the Trinamool was uneventful and Das accused the party leaders of neglecting him.

Finally, he decided to quit Trinamool and announced his decision before the media.

Das, however, is yet to chart out his next political move. While, he hinted to prepare for polls as an independent candidate, speculations are rife that he might join Congress.

According to the political analysts, political fortune of Das appears to be bleak and his popularity in his Surma constituency nose dived. In view of such a situation, Das’s relevance in State political arena appears to be negligible.
