Keeping an eye on the upcoming by-polls and Assembly election, Tripura Pradesh Congress demanded the Election Commission of India’s strong intervention during polls to ensure that people can exercise their democratic rights, said Pradesh Congress chief Birajit Sinha from New Delhi on Thursday.

He said, a delegation of Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) met the Chief Election Commissioner of Election Commission of India at Delhi on Thursday and sought close monitoring of the ensuing polls. Tripura Pradesh Congress informed the ECI that close monitoring by the ECI was necessary as free and fair elections were not held in the state during the Lok Sabha and Urban Local Body polls.

The delegation comprised of TPCC president Birjit Sinha, Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman, AICC leaders Dr Ajoy Kumar and Szarita Laiphlang and others.

After meeting the Chief Election Commission of the ECI, Congress leaders slammed the ruling BJP in Tripura and accused them of throttling democracy.

TPCC President Birjit Sinha told reporters that during the meeting the Congress delegation apprised the ECI of the current situation in Tripura. “We complained to him about the deteriorating law and order situation in Tripura,” Sinha said, alleging that there is no atmosphere prevailing in Tripura where elections can be conducted.

He alleged, “The BJP cadres are attacking the workers and supporters of the opposition parties in the state and leaving no stone unturned in spoiling the election atmosphere.”

“We demanded the ECI to send a strong team during the ensuing by-election in Tripura and closely monitor the situation and help people exercise their franchise,” Sinha told reporters.
