Congress MLA and former president of the Tripura Pradesh Congress, Birajit Sinha urgently called for enhanced personal security in the wake of an alleged death threat issued by a suspected mafia syndicate.

Addressing the media during a press conference held on Tuesday, Sinha disclosed that he has taken the matter seriously and has already communicated his concerns to prominent authorities, including the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, the Director General of Police, and the SP of the Unakoti district.

The Congress MLA alleged a mafia group, believed to be headed by Abdul Mannan, a resident of Gobindapur in Kailashahar, has been exerting control over all tender activities originating from the office of the Executive Engineer, Kumarghat division, DWS.

Sinha detailed that his involvement in the matter had led to him becoming the focus of the mafia group’s attention. The MLA claimed and alleged that he had approached relevant authorities to address the issue of alleged control over tender activities which sparked the threat on his life.

Presenting a significant piece of evidence, Sinha pointed to an audio recording that allegedly implicates an individual named Abdul Mannan and his associates in a past assault that occurred in 2003.

In the audio, the intention to harm Sinha was purportedly expressed. The MLA expressed his concern in a letter to the Speaker, stating, “Given the gravity of these threats and the potential peril they entail, I am compelled to seek reassurance and support from the esteemed Tripura Legislative Assembly.”

The reminiscence of the 2003 Baburbazar incident, wherein a malicious attack against Sinha during an electoral campaign resulted in the loss of his Personal Guard, was also brought up by the Congress MLA.

He highlighted that the violence did not conclude with that incident and stressed that similar attacks have transpired at various locations throughout the state.

Sinha demanded swift action against the alleged mafia group and immediate measures to ensure his safety.
