The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) is gearing up for the Guwahati Abhiyan, a campaign aimed at improving connectivity in the state.
The campaign aims to push for the construction of a second rail line that will connect every district and sub-division of the state. The TPCC president, Birajit Sinha, revealed this plan at a press conference held at the party’s office in Agartala on Thursday (April 27).
A delegation of Congress leaders will meet the General Manager of the Maligaon based North-East frontier Railway division on May 8 next to press for the demand.
“We believe that connecting Sabroom to the rail line is crucial, as it presents significant trade potential with Bangladesh,” Sinha said and added, “Alongside the rail line, we will also push for the establishment of a rail division in Tripura.”
Sinha welcomed the recent proposal by the BJP government to establish a second rail line in Tripura but stressed that the Congress party’s demand is for the rail line to touch every district headquarters and sub-division of the state.
He emphasized that this would enhance connectivity with neighbouring Bangladesh.
In addition to the Guwahati Abhiyan, the Congress party plans to launch the Delhi Abhiyan soon to press for the party’s demand for resumption of operation of Kamalpur airport and establish a second airport at Kailasahar. State Congress delegates will draw the attention of the Civil Aviation Ministry on this demand.
Sinha explained that during the time of the UPA government, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had approved the Kailasahar airport as one of the 100 approved airports in the country. However, the then Left front government in Tripura failed to acquire the necessary land for the airport. The TPCC believes that the current government will work to address this issue and enhance the state’s connectivity.
The party believes that these initiatives will not only improve trade potential but also boost the overall development of the state.
