The Tripura unit of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPIM) convened a significant one-day State Committee meeting in Agartala on Monday.
The meeting was attended by Party’s top national leaders and State leaders including CPIM All India General Secretary Sitaram Yechury, Politburo members Prakash Karat and Manik Sarkar, State Party Secretary Jitendra Chowdhury, and other prominent figures.
The meeting, held on Monday, centered on a comprehensive discussion of the prevailing post-poll situation in the state, as well as the current political landscape.
Sources within the party revealed that the primary focus of the meeting was addressing the issue of post-poll violence, which had adversely affected party supporters. After taking stock of the situation, detailed deliberations were conducted on compensating the victims of such violence. Additionally, the leaders were engaged in discussions regarding organizational matters and devised strategies aimed at regaining lost ground in the state before the upcoming Lok Sabha Polls.
While a detailed report on the organizational matters discussed during the meeting was yet to be obtained at the time of reporting, it is anticipated that the party leaders will soon hold a press conference to disclose the outcomes and decisions reached during the State Committee meeting.
The significance of today’s meeting is underscored by the upcoming elections in Tripura. The CPIM’s relegation to the third position in the State Assembly, particularly its failure to secure a single seat in the 20 ST reserved constituencies, which were once considered a Left stronghold, has compelled the party to urgently devise effective strategies for revival ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
During the previous State Committee meeting, party leaders attributed the emergence of the TIPRA Motha Party (TMP) as the primary factor behind their electoral setback. The TMP managed to secure the second position, pushing the CPIM into third place.
However, the leaders refrained from divulging any organizational weaknesses that contributed to the party’s gradual decline, particularly in the ST reserved 20 seats where they failed to secure any representation in the 2023 Assembly polls.
Moreover, the Party leaders are yet to shed light on the benefit or loss of seat adjustment policy in 2023 State Assembly polls with Congress.
Critics argue that the party’s apparent failure to cultivate young leaders has been a significant factor, apart from other factors, contributing to its steady decline. There is an urgent need for a charismatic young leader capable of understanding the aspirations of today’s smartphone-savvy younger generation. As the CPIM seeks to revive its fortunes, addressing this crucial aspect may prove instrumental in attracting a broader base of support.
The State Committee meeting serves as a platform for the CPIM to introspect, strategize, and respond effectively to the evolving political landscape in Tripura. As the party endeavors to regain its footing and reconnect with the electorate, the outcomes of this meeting and the subsequent press conference are eagerly awaited by party members, supporters, and political observers alike.
