Curtains on two-day-long State-level Conference have been drawn on Saturday. As expected, interim state secretary Jitendra Choudhury has been selected as the party’s State secretary unanimously.
The state conference started on Friday and the All India general secretary of the party Sitaram Yechury delivered the introductory speech and explained the emerging situation in the State and country. In his speech, Giving a hint with the alliance with Congress, Yechury stressed the need for the formation of a broad-base secular platform to counter the BJP.
Later, Jitendra Choudhury presented the organizational report on which delegates including Politburo members Prakash Karat and Manik Sarkar, CPM leader Aghore Debbarma and others discussed and gave suggestions.
The conference continued till late evening today. Delegates from all over the state attended the conference.
The state conference of the party bears importance in the sense that this was the first state-level conference held after BJP came into power in 2018.
Since the last Assembly polls, CPM is suffering humiliating defeats in polls – the latest being the Urban Body Polls. The deaths of several top-level leaders further added woes for the party.
According to party sources, the Conference pondered over the present situation and stressed the need to give the youths and women more responsibilities to revamp the organization.
In the conference, a 70-member State Committee led by Jitendra Chowdhury was announced. Seven females found places in the Committee – still leaving a huge gender disparity against the women.
Meantime, the political circle of the State is curious to know about the strategy that the party would adopt against the formidable opponent, the ruling BJP. The party s facing an existential crisis and all eyes are now focused on Jitendra Choudhury as to how he steers the party during its worst-ever crisis.
