Rajya Sabha MP and former Chief Minister, Biplab Kumar Deb revealed on Sunday that the Tripura government is considering the establishment of a well-equipped hospital, similar to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) in Shillong. This move is being considered instead of establishing an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), as previously planned.

Speaking to the reporters at his Agartala residence on Sunday (April 30), Deb explained that after conducting a thorough study, it was found that setting up an AIIMS-like hospital in Tripura would require massive infrastructure, and would therefore be a time-consuming process. Instead, the government has decided to establish a NEIGRIHMS-type hospital that would take only 5-6 years to build and dedicate to the people of Tripura.

Deb further stated that although the government had submitted a detailed report on land acquisition for the AIIMS proposal, it is still pending with concerned authorities and is likely to take more time for their response. Therefore, the government has decided to take immediate action to introduce a NEIGRIHMS-like hospital in Tripura.

Deb informed the reporters about the success of the recently held Sangsad Health Camps in Tripur. The health camps were held in Khowai, Mohanpur, and Shantirbazar in three days starting from April 28, and eight expert doctors from reputed hospitals across the country participated in the camp. A total of 2,946 people were registered and benefited from the services provided by the doctors.

The Sangsad Health Camp was organized with the objective of providing better health services to the poor people of Tripura. This also helped to enhance the collaboration between doctors from Tripura and experts from All India Medical Institutions (AIMS) and other reputed hospitals of the country. Deb mentioned that the doctors of Tripura who accompanied the experts got the opportunity to communicate with them and exchange their views and opinions. This will also enhance the trend of attending patients via video conferencing and telemedicine.

Deb praised the expert doctors for their efforts in rendering health services to the people of the state during the three days and said that the doctors are keen to visit the state in the near future. He also stated that such health camps like the Sangsad Health Camp will be conducted in the future for the people of the state.

Thanking the participating doctors, he said, the Sangsad Health Camp has sent a message to the people of Tripura that health experts and doctors from reputed hospitals are willing to come to the state to see patients. The trend of patients shifting to hospitals outside the state for better health services has gradually come down since the establishment of the BJP government, and the Sangsad Health Camp has further improved the state’s healthcare services, Deb commented.
