Even as monsoon is yet to enter Tripura; heavy pre-monsoon rains lashed out in Agartala city on Thursday, inundated several areas and affected the normal life.

Most of the city roads became waterlogged despite high power pumping stations tried their best to flush out the rain water.

Former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb toured waterlogged areas and directed the concerned officials to take steps for overcoming the water logging situation.

In a social media post, Deb said, “Due to heavy downpour, water has accumulated in some parts of the Agartala city. We are looking into the situation and talking to the authorities and officials to take all necessary steps to address the prevailing situation and overcome it for the sake of people”.

Meantime, Director Indian Meteorological Department Tripura State Office, Nahush Kulkarni said, the overall seasonal rainfall recorded, so far, is around 360.8 millimeters which is far less than the average rainfall of 453 millimeters.

“The overall deficit has been calculated to be 18 percent but there is nothing to worry as it is expected that the pre-monsoon rains shall continue for next three to four days and if the incessant rain continues, the rain deficiency may be covered up”, he added.

When asked about the arrival of monsoon, he said, the monsoon is steadily approaching towards the North East. “It is predicted that on May 27, monsoon shall enter Kerala and accordingly we will give regular updates on the movement of monsoon in India”, he said.

Heavy downpour pulled down the mercury as the maximum and minimum temperatures recorded on Thursday are 36 degree Celsius and 25.8 degree Celsius respectively.
