A farmer was shot while collecting betel leaves from his plantation in Tripura on Sunday. The incident took place in Dhanchhara village under Kamalachhara under Ambasa police station. The injured person is Shantithang Malsom.

Immediately after the incident and the shooting, Shantithang screamed for help, and the shooter, Bibi Lal Malsom, ran to the spot hearing the scream. Seeing the blood, he fainted and fell to the ground. Shantithang was later sent to the Dhalai District Hospital. From there the doctors referred him to the GB Hospital in Agartala. Sources said, at least three bullets hit the victim.

According to the details of the incident, Bibi Lal Malsom of the neighborhood went to the forest to hunt monkeys with a handmade gun early in the morning. Around 11 am, hearing a sound in the betel plantation, where Shantithang was working, in the Dhanchhara jungle, Bibi Lal thought it would be a large monkey. He did not think it could be a human being. Thinking it was a monkey, Bibi Lal shot, and it hit Shantithang.

The incident has caused a great deal of unrest among the people of Dhanchhara. However, there was no prior enmity or conflict between Shantithang and Bibi Lal Malsom. The shooting was completely accidental, claimed the locals of Dhanchhara village.

No case has been filed by the injured Shantithang in Ambasa police station till the report was filed.

Notably, country-made guns are still found in many houses in remote areas, mainly for hunting purposes. However, many believe that with several incidences of crimes, even in remote areas, it is pertinent that Police take proper action on the country-made gun possession issue.
