In a scathing attack on TIPRA Motha Party’s leader, Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma, over his social media comments on the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), Tripura Pradesh Congress leader and MLA Sudip Roy Barman without naming anyone, urged the Tiprasa community to reconsider their trust on Deb Barma.
Breathing fire at Debbarma, the Tripura Pradesh Congress leader said TIPRA Motha Party (TMP) gained grounds while opposing the CAA. But now Debbarma is speaking in the language of the BJP led State and Central governments.
“The so-called savior has let you down. The person you placed your trust in has deceived you. I urge you not to believe in him, not to support him, and not to forgive him,” Barman said during a press conference held at the state Congress headquarters in the capital city.
Sudip Roy Barman also announced joining of three TMP activists in Congress who quit the latter as a mark of protest to Pradyot Kishore’s support to CAA roll out.
Barman also announced plans to launch a vigorous protest against the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in Tripura.
Barman further revealed that a delegation of Pradesh Congress leaders is scheduled to meet the Chief Secretary, JK Sinha, to present a memorandum on this issue.
Highlighting the potential challenges of implementing the CAA, Barman questioned, “People in the remote and hilly outskirts of the state are already struggling with no work, no food, and no money. How will the state manage the additional burden ? Where will these people be settled?”
He said, “We are sympathetic to the people of religious minorities residing in countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, but the CAA is not the solution to their plight”.
To recall, on March 11, the Centre notified the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules 2024, thus paving the way for enforcing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which seeks to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis and Christians who came to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan before December 31, 2014.
Following the advice of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), a six-member state-level empowered committee with the Director of Census Operations as its chairman was formed in Tripura recently to grant citizenship under the CAA.
