In support of the demand for immediate justice and relief for the victims of recent violence in Gandachhera under the Dhalai District of Tripura and floods, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) Gandacherra Sub-Divisional Committee staged a massive protest on Wednesday. As the reports of a lack of adequate relief supply to the victims surfaced, the Opposition Party in Tripura hit the streets and voiced concern.
After a rally, the CPIM party leaders submitted a memorandum to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM). In the memorandum, the CPIM outlined a list of 11 demands, including:
- Compensation for Attack Victims: The party demanded adequate compensation for families affected by the violent attacks that occurred in July. In the attacks, houses of many Bengali families were torched and they were forced to stay in relief camps.
- Enhanced Security: In view of the violence in July, the CPIM urged the authorities to establish permanent security camps in terror-stricken areas to protect the lives and property of residents.
- Flood Relief: The party sought a thorough assessment of losses individuals suffered in the recent floods and demanded appropriate compensation for affected families.
- Free Ration: The CPIM proposed providing free ration supplies for six months to those affected by both violence and floods.
- Infrastructure Repair: The party called for the immediate repair of irrigation systems damaged by floods and the restoration of dilapidated roads in the sub-division.
- Drinking Water: The CPIM highlighted the acute shortage of drinking water in flood-affected areas and hilly regions and demanded urgent measures to address this issue.
Following the submission of the memorandum, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate assured the CPIM delegation that the demands would be considered and necessary steps would be taken.
The protest was attended by hundreds of party workers and supporters, who marched through the streets of Gandacherra before converging at the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office. Local leaders, including Dhananjoy Tripura, Lalit Tripura, Amalendu Debbarma, Sushanta Hajari, Sumati Ranjan Chakma, Shailesh Das, and others, participated in the demonstration.
