It is now official that deadly and super fast spreading Delta Plus strain is now posing a great threat.
This strain is now predominant and active in all the districts. Weekend curfew was imposed, day and night curfew were extended – but a moot point is that will administration intervene and stop holding ‘super spreader’ Political activities.
In view of emerging situation, administration imposed Weekend Curfew from 12 noon of July 10 to 6am July 12 next in Agartala Municipality Corporation (AMC) and 12 other Urban Local Bodies (ULBs). Besides, Corona Day Curfew (2pm to 6pm) was extended to July 16 in AMC and 12 other ULBs. Night Curfew (6pm to 5am next morning) remained in force across the State, a Government notification said.
According to the doctors who are leading war against Covid pandemic expressed deep concern over prevalence of Delta Plus variant of coronavirus and said the situation in State is alarming as Delta Plus variant is deadlier as well as it tends to lower Covid Vaccine induced immunity. Also this variant spreads faster and rapidly.
Addressing a press conference, state surveillance officer for COVID19- Dr. Deep Kumar Debbarma said, a total 151 Covid report samples were sent to a laboratory in Kalyani of West Bengal for sequencing. As per the results, Delta Plus variant was detected in above 90 percent of the samples that included 80 percent cases in the West Tripura district alone.”
Dr. Tapan Majumder, head of microbiology department, AGMC said, out of the 151 samples sent for sequencing, a total of 138 samples were detected as Delta Plus variant, 10 were Delta strain and the remaining were three UK variant.
“Out of the 138 samples with report of Delta Plus variant, 115 samples were in West Tripura district alone followed by 8 in Sepahijala, 5 in Gomati, 2 in South Tripura, 1 in Khowai, 1 in Dhalai, 4 in Unakoti and 2 in North Tripura district,” Dr. Majumder said.
“The Delta Plus strain spreads fast as well as decreases the efficacy of vaccine among the infected persons. This strain mostly attacks the lungs that increase the death risk. The other thing is, if a member of any family is infected by the delta plus strain then the whole family gets infected,” Dr. Majumder said.
Without any hesitation, doctors clearly said that gross carelessness behavior of people and violation of Covid norms are reasons behind high rate of infection.
In fact, while common people are ignoring the Covid protocols, it is also true that Political parties are the biggest offenders. Almost every day, political events are taking place in Agartala and other parts of the State.
All the political parties – no matter whether ruling or opposition – are conducting programmes during ‘no curfew’ time. Large gatherings by political parties may prove their might but it is also paving way for Delta Plus variant to infect more and more people.
West Tripura District is witnessing maximum number of agitations, celebrations and joining programmes by all parties. The administration may play tough with common and enforce Covid and Curfew norms more effectively – however, the question is as to why administration is mum of super spreader Political activities. With Delta Plus posing great threat, why the administrations in AGM and 12 other ULBs are not slapping a total ban on all sorts of political activities?
