Education Minister of Tripura, Ratan Lal  Nath denied CPM’s allegations on rule of law in the State and said on Thursday, crimes declined under BJP-IPFT rule compared to previous LF regime.

He said, Crime against women declined significantly over the years in Tripura and overall, instances of general crime also recorded a noticeable dip.

The Minister said, Crime Against Women (CAW) declined to 265 in April 2021 from 972 in 2017. He also mentioned that 2219 general crimes were recorded in 2017 which decreased to 1119 in April 2021.

It may be noted, CPM leader Manik Sarkar recently raised questions on prevailing rule of law in the State. In reply, Nath presented data on crimes and rubbished Sarkar’s allegations. He said, the situation in the State is improving significantly under incumbent Government compared to the situation in the previous LF Government.

Addressing media, the Minister presented data of different sorts of crimes including CAW for the years 2017, 2020 and 2021 (upto April).

On Crime against Women, Nath said, “a total of 972 cases and 873 cases were reported in 2017 and 2020 respectively. However, the total number of CAW declined to 265 in 2021 (Upto April)”.

Notably, Data for the year 2017 is as per Crime in India while data for 2020 and 2021 are as per the available record of the concerned office.

Elaborating further, Nath said, “Number of rape cases declined from 183 in 2017 to 45 in April 2021. Similarly, molestation cases recorded a dip from 260 in 2017 to 39 in April 2021. Kidnapping and Dowry deaths also recorded a decrease during the periods. The number of Kidnapping came down to 04 in April 2021 from 95 such cases in 2017 while Dowry death recorded a dip from 33 in 2017 to 04 in April 2021. The number of Torture and other crimes also registered a fall from 348 and 53 respectively in 2017 to 110 and 13 in April 2021”.

The Education Minister also mentioned that General crimes like robbery, murder, rioting, kidnapping etc. also registered a fall till April 2021 compared to 2017.

“Incidences of murder and kidnapping declined from 124 and 117 in 2017 to 31 and 51 in April 2021. Cases of Rioting decreased to 48 in April 2021 compared to 124 in 2017.  Other Misc Crimes took a dip from 1385 in 2017 to 837 in April 2021”, Nath said and added that Dacoity, Robbery, Burglary and theft cases also recorded a decline in April 2021 compared to 2017.
