Fake currency: Police arrest one more
In connection with the fake currency issue at Sonamura, Tripura Police arrested one more person – a woman on Thursday. Already, Police arrested one Jayanta Debbarma with fake currency on Sunday last.
Police from Sonamura Police Station detained Runa Akhtar on Thursday for her alleged involvement in the illegal business of fake currency. After producing her at Sonamura court Chief Judicial Magistrate Sarbajit Choudhury sent her to jail. She will be produced before the court on February 15 again.
Earlier, Police detained one Joyanta Debbarma, a youth of Madhuban area in Sonamura on Sunday with fake currency. Acting on secret information police detained him from Sonamura college area.
During preliminary interrogation, police came to know that Joyanta kept 20 notes of Rs. 2000 along with him. He received the notes from Runa Aktar, wife of Atikul Islam of Thakurmura area.
On the basis of the information, police arrested Runa Aktar 3 days after arresting Jayanta. Considering the importance of the case the court sent to her jail. Meanwhile, Atikul Islam is reported to be absconded.
Special drive for leprosy patients
The West Tripura District Health and Family Welfare Society in coordination with other departments has launched a 15-day long campaign aimed at identifying and treating leprosy patients of the district as soon as possible, West District Magistrate Debapriya Bardhan said on Thursday.
The campaign – ‘National Leprosy Eradication’ started on January 30 last and would be continued till February 13 next.
Addressing a press conference at his office, Bardhan said, the aim of the campaign is to create awareness about leprosy in society as well as to bring the patients identified after screening in different places under treatment.
He said, the ratio as per population of leprosy active cases in the west district is less as the standard positivity rate is 1 per 10,000.
According to Bardhan, eight active cases of leprosy – six males and two females – have been reported in the western district and a total of 34 cases have been reported across the state so far.
He appealed to people to participate in the screening, not to discriminate against any patient and not to spread rumours about leprosy in society.
