The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Panisagar under the North Tripura District has witnessed a bumper harvest of litchi, a fruit cherished for its sweet and aromatic flavor, this year.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), a pioneer in using agricultural science to practice in the region, has become a successful cultivator of approximately 150 litchi trees.

These trees show a marvel of productivity, each yielding an impressive over 70 kilograms of litchi. The harvested fruits have found their way into the hands of eager traders, subsequently reaching markets far and wide.

Cultivating litchi trees highlights sustainable agricultural practice which require minimal intervention and modest fertilization.

Dr. Sajal Debbarma, a horticultural expert at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, shared insights into the abundance of summer fruits in Tripura’s markets.

With a variety that includes watermelon, mango, grapes, and of course, litchi, the state’s consumers are spoilt for choice.

However, Dr. Debbarma cautions fruit enthusiasts to be vigilant. He recommended a thorough cleansing of these summer delights in a solution of water, baking soda, and salt, or vinegar, for about 10-15 minutes before consumption.

This precautionary measure is crucial as it mitigates the risks posed by chemicals like calcium carbide, which are often used to hasten ripening but can have detrimental effects on health, leading to various ailments and digestive issues.

As the season progresses, the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in Tripura continue to stand as a pillar of agricultural excellence, fostering growth not only in its gardens but also in the community it serves.
