Amidst ongoing Assam-Mizoram border dispute, a group of people blocked the Assam-Agartala National Highway at Lowairpoa area in Assam on Monday to protest against the transportation of essential items to Mizoram via Damchhera in North Tripura district.
After the July 26 violence in which seven persons including six Assam Police died, Assam blocked the road at Medlichhara under Karimganj through which vehicles carrying essential goods would enter into Mizoram. Meanwhile, some essential goods loaded trucks entered Kanmum district of Mizoram via Damchhara area.

This irked the locals of Karimganj and adjoining areas and a group of people submitted a memorandum to the SP of Karimganj, Bazarichhara OC and even the Assam Chief Minister to inform that locals would block Assam-Agartala NH at Lowairpoa in Assam, if movement of trucks to Mizoram via Damchhera continued. They set an ultimatum during submission of the memorandum, after which they would start road blockade.
Accordingly, the protestors started the road blockade agitation from 6 am and continued almost for four hours. During the road blockade, hundreds of Goods carriers which were coming to Tripura remained stranded on the Highway at Lowairpoa – however, protestors did not stop private vehicles and passenger vehicles.
Meanwhile, the Officer-in-Charge of Bazarichhara Police station held discussion with the agitators. The OC, reportedly, assured the agitating locals that their demand would looked into by the concerned authorities.
After obtaining the assurance, agitators withdrew their road blockade, but threatened if the essential goods supply continues, they will resort to intensive agitation.
