Tripura witnessed its first Dengue-related death this year when Subhas Sarkar (72), a resident of Shankhamura in Dhanpur, succumbed to the disease late Tuesday night. The incident was reported from the Dhanpur area in the Sonamura sub-division under Sepahijala District of Tripura. The death sparked concerns among health authorities and commoners.
According to in-charge Sub-divisional Medical Officer, Dr. Rakesh Das, the number of Dengue cases in the Sonamura sub-division escalated to 170 on Wednesday. Two more patients from different healthcare centres were referred to GB Hospital today for advanced treatment.
In response to the alarming situation, a crucial administrative meeting was convened at the Sonamura Community Health Centre (CHC) with the participation of prominent members, including the Commissioner of the Sonamura Nagar Panchayat, along with several administrative officials. The meeting aimed to assess the gravity of the emerging Dengue outbreak in the sub-division and devise appropriate measures for containment and management.
Health authorities have implemented special steps at the Sonamura and Kathalia CHCs, as well as Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in Dhanpur, Microsapara, Nidaya, and other healthcare facilities to handle the emerging situations.
The deceased, Subhas Sarkar, was taken to Sonamura CHC on the night of July 27 after experiencing symptoms of illness. Following diagnostic tests, medical professionals confirmed Sarkar’s diagnosis of Dengue fever, deceased’s son said.
Due to his advanced age and underlying health conditions, doctors promptly referred him to GB Hospital for specialized care. However, Sarkar disregarded the medical advice and opted to return to his residence in Dhanpur.
As his condition deteriorated rapidly, he was subsequently admitted to Hapania Hospital in the early hours of July 27. However, Sarkar’s health did not improve, and on July 30, he was transferred to a private hospital, where he passed away late Tuesday night.
In a bid to prevent further spread of Dengue fever, the administration has undertaken various measures, including awareness campaigns among the public, intensified cleanliness drives, and conducting fogging operations in high-risk areas. Additionally, the formation of Monitoring Committees in the Sonamura Nagar Panchayat area is aimed at closely monitoring the situation and promptly addressing any potential Dengue outbreaks.
