It is now the turn for Baby corn, produced and processed in Tripura, to be exported to other states. The first-ever consignment of 32 MT Baby corn was dispatched from Kumarghat in Tripura to Kolkata on Saturday.

On a day, when the birth anniversary of the architect of Modern Tripura, Maharaja Bir Bikram was being celebrated across Tripura, a simple programme was organized in the Industrial estate at Kumarghat under the Unakoti district to formally flag off the consignment of canned baby corn today.

Animal Resource Development Department Minister Sudhangshu Das flagged off 32 MT Baby Corn consignments to Kolkata.

Speaking on the occasion, Das said farmers will be encouraged to send the crops produced to outside of State markets for the purpose of selling agricultural products. Crops produced in the state including pineapple, jackfruit and tamarind are being exported, thereby strengthening the economic base of the state. With the commencement of Baby Corn export to other States, farmers’ earnings will get a boost.

Notably, the State Government as part of its plan to double farmers’ income and save them from climate-induced losses, is pushing for diversification of crop cultivation with an emphasis on horti crops. The initiatives proved beneficial for the farmers as State’s products are finding markets in the State as well as in other States. Besides, pineapples are being exported to foreign countries as well.

“Expansion of market beyond the boundary of the State has come as a boon for the State farmers”, opined the agriculture experts.

In today’s programme, secretary of Agriculture Department Apurba Roy, Director of the Department Saradindu Das and other dignitaries were present and spoke on different aspects of the Baby Corn and other crop cultivation. Sabhadhipati of Unakoti Zila Parishad Amalendu Das presided over the programme.
