In line with the guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI), linking of Aadhaar cards with the voter cards would be done in Tripura and a two month long drive will start from August 01, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Kiran Gitte.
As per the ECI guidelines, “A Time bound drive is being started w.e.f. 01.8.22 for collection of Aadhaar number of the existing electors. Furnishing of Aadhaar number is purely
voluntary. Objective of the programme is to establish the identity of electors and authentication of entries in Electoral Roll”.
Addressing a press conference at the Civil Secretariat on Saturday, he said linking Aadhaar with voter cards would help identify duplicate voters.
He detailed the process of the linking and said, “BLOs will visit door-to-door to collect Aadhaar number in specific forms for linking the Aadhaar card with the voter card from August 1 next and the drive will continue till September next”.
He pointed out that the Aadhar number would not be published in the electoral roll in public domain; it would be used internally. The move is to ensure one vote for one person”, Gitte informed the media.
He appealed to all for cooperating with the BLOs for linking the Aadhar cards with the voter cards.
The CEO also shed lights on three other important decisions of the Election Commission of India.
The youngsters in 17+ age group can now apply in advance for having their names enrolled in Voter’s list and not necessarily have to await the pre-requisite criterion of attaining age of 18 years on 1st January of a year, he said.
Besides, the voter list would be revised four times in a year from now onwards; the qualifying dates are January 1, April 1, July 1 and October 1, the Chief Electoral Officer said.
The two other decisions are- gender neutral provision for Service and Special Electors and Power to acquire premises for the purpose of conduct of election.
