While the 75 years of Independence was celebrated across Tripura in a jovial, patriotic and peaceful mood, at least two separate incidences of mishaps – death of two school students and burn injuries of a Judo trainer during I-day celebration, marred the mood in North District.
Two school students – Shubhrajit Nama of Pratyetroy village and Sourav Nama of Hurua – drowned in Kakri River in North Tripura on Monday while the duo along with their friends was returning home after Independence Day celebrations.
The deceased students were students of class VIII in Pratyek HS+2 School in North Tripura.
Local sources said, Shubhrajit and Sourav along with their friends were returning home after attending the National Flag hoisting ceremony in their school on Monday.
For reasons yet to be ascertained, all of them went to the nearby Kakri River. Locals heard screaming for help and rushed to the spot. They came to know that two boys drowned in the river. Before the Fire Service personnel from Dharmanagar and Police from Kadamtala PS reached the spot, villagers recovered the bodies of the two students from the river one after another.
In the melee, the accompanying friends of the duo fled from the spot. Bodies were sent for an autopsy. Police started an investigation.
In another incident, One Judo trainer suffered burn injuries during the Independence Day celebrations. The incident occurred at Ichchai Lal Chhara under Kadamtala on Monday. The injured trainer, Sunil Das (22) was preparing a fire ring for his 12 Judo trainees who were demonstrating Judo skills as part of the I-day celebration.
The last part of the event was jumping through a ring of fire – but it went awry as the trainer went to lit clothes on the fire ring after pouring kerosene.
The fire caught the clothes of the ring and the synthetic tracksuit of the trainer also caught fire.
The trainees and others came to the rescue of the Judo trainer and pulled off the burning clothes from his body.
It is reported Sunil Das sustained 40 per cent burn injuries – he is currently undergoing treatment at his home.
