In a shocking incident two minor girls were reportedly gang-raped in a rubber garden located in Tingharia, under the Gomati district of Tripura on Thursday (May 11). 

The incident has ignited widespread outrage and concern among the local community.

However, the police wasted no time in responding to the distressing situation and swiftly apprehended all nine individuals accused of being involved in the crime within a span of 24 hours.

In a tweet, the Gomati District Police stated, “With the determined efforts of the police team, all nine accused persons involved in the recent gang-rape case under Ompi PS have been arrested in a very short time. Further investigation is underway.”

It learnt the two girls, hailing from the Dumbur area, had attended the Boishakhi Mela in Amar Pur Chandibari before being accompanied by a group of nine boys to an isolated location in a rubber plantation under the pretext of conversation and relaxation.

Tragically, upon reaching the rubber plantation, the boys allegedly subjected the girls to a horrific gang rape. The traumatized girls later confided in their parents and victims’ parents filed a formal complaint against the alleged perpetrators.

The police authorities from Ampi and Birganj promptly swung into action and apprehended one of the key suspects, identified as 19-year-old Melarai Jamatia from Tingharia village under Ampi Nagar PS.

Subsequently, the remaining eight suspects, namely Ranjit Jamatia (19), Hakuk Jamatia (20), Kartik Jamatia (26), Nata Jamatia (23), Falas Jamatia (27), Rabin Jamatia, and Apter Jamatia (18), who are also residents of Tingharia village, were apprehended.

The police have pressed charges against all nine accused individuals under sections 376D, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, along with section 5(g) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

In view of the widespread concern and condemnation among the local community, the police reassured the public of their unwavering commitment to upholding the safety of all individuals and have pledged to take all necessary steps to bring the accused to justice.
