Panic and distress have gripped Jaykatpur School and the surrounding Hrishyamukh block areas in South Tripura following a mysterious infestation of unidentified insects.

In response to this alarming situation, school authorities have taken the precautionary measure of closing the school for three days.

The school has been under siege by swarms of these ‘unknown’ insects, which resemble mosquitoes, as they relentlessly pestered students, teachers, and other staff members for the past three days.

“Normally, on the eve of Diwali, several types of insects appear every year. However, this year, we are witnessing these insects which we never saw in our lives. These look like mosquitoes and bite. As potential health hazards owing to its biting are unknown, panic among the students, teachers and guardians is palpable”, one of the teachers commented.

With growing concern and panic, the school’s headmaster took decisive action on Monday and communicated the emerging situation to the concerned District Education Officer and Inspector of Schools.

Meantime, the District Health Department also swung into action. Dr. Subrata Das, the Chief Medical Officer of South Tripura, along with a team from Matai Hospital, inspected the school premises and its neighbouring areas and took stock of the situation. Dr. Das reported that these insects were seen in various parts of the school, from the classrooms to the verandah. Although they resembled mosquitoes, their exact identity and whether their bites pose health risks remain uncertain.

Dr. Das, during his inspection, urged the school authorities to keep the institution closed until the insect infestation was effectively resolved.

The incident has left the local community deeply concerned, and efforts are underway to identify the actual nature of these unusual insects. Authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety of the students and staff at Jaykatpur School and the surrounding areas.
