Veteran Trade Unionist and Ex-MLA Madhab Saha No More
Agartala, Feb 21: Veteran leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and former legislator Madhab Saha passed away at a private hospital in Agartala on Saturday afternoon. He was 76 and had been battling cardiac ailments.
Saha was admitted to a private medical facility in the city on February 9 after developing serious heart complications.
Despite sustained medical intervention, doctors were unable to revive him, and he succumbed later in the day. He is survived by his wife, son and other close relatives.
Several senior leaders, including former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, expressed profound sorrow over his demise and paid tribute to his lifelong contribution to the party and democratic movements in Tripura.
Later, Saha’s mortal remains were taken to the Tripura Legislative Assembly premises, where lawmakers cutting across party lines offered floral tributes. Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury and Acting Speaker Ramprasad Paul were among those present to pay their respects.
In an official condolence message, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Tripura state committee described Saha as a disciplined and devoted organiser who played a vital role in strengthening mass movements across the state.
The party stated that his death marks the loss of a steadfast comrade committed to public causes and democratic rights, and extended sympathies to his grieving family.
Saha began his political journey during the student agitations of the 1960s and formally joined the CPI(M) in 1967.
In his early years, he was associated with the Students’ Federation of India before dedicating himself to trade union work. He later became a member of the state secretariat of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions, where he played a significant role in mobilising workers across Tripura.

He was elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly from the Matabari constituency in Udaipur in 1993 and was re-elected in 2003.
Recognised for his active participation in Assembly proceedings, Saha was inducted into the CPI(M) state committee in 1991 and continued to shoulder organisational responsibilities until 2025, when he stepped down due to health issues.
