West Tripura Consumer Tribunal President Accused of Drunk Bench Conduct
Agartala, Jan 17: Gautam Sarkar, a former judicial official now presiding over the West Tripura District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, is facing grave accusations from the local Bar Association.
Lawyers and tribunal employees have called for his dismissal, alleging he presides over court sessions while intoxicated and acts aggressively toward staff and legal counsel.
Details of the Allegations
A group of legal professionals, including several female attorneys, claimed that Sarkar frequently brings alcohol to the workplace in his personal bag and drinks during business hours.
One woman advocate has formally filed a grievance, accusing the President of physical assault and the use of offensive language; however, she notes that authorities have yet to intervene.
According to a representative from the Bar Association:
• Intoxication: Advocates have repeatedly reported the scent of alcohol during official hearings.
• Conduct: The President is accused of using derogatory and unprofessional language while on the bench.
• Moral Concerns: Members of the legal community expressed deep concern regarding his moral fitness for the position.
Workplace Environment
The tribunal’s administrative staff have also voiced their grievances, citing a climate of fear and intimidation.
Employees allege that Sarkar regularly shouts at and insults them. One staff member highlighted that the office feels unsafe when the President consumes alcohol within his private chambers.
Bar Association Protest
The Bar Association has launched a collective protest, demanding Sarkar’s immediate termination. The advocates have declared a boycott of all tribunal proceedings until he is removed from his post.
They maintain that legal work cannot continue under such conditions, specifically citing the consumption of alcohol within his official workspace.
Response from Gautam Sarkar
In his defense, Sarkar has categorically denied the claims, labeling them as unfounded and untrue.
He questioned the motives of the staff and legal professionals, stating, “I am not a mad person,” and suggested he is being targeted for harassment.
Sarkar also noted his history of significant health issues—including bypass surgery and treatment for neck cancer—as context for his current situation.
Current Status
As of now, government authorities have not released an official statement regarding the formal complaints or the demand for the President’s removal.
