One 45-year-old woman was kidnapped in front of her husband. She was later killed and her body was dumped in an abandoned toilet pit. The incident occurred at Lengtibari of East Behalabari under Champahaoar Police Station under Khowai in Tripura on Thursday. Police arrested eight persons in connection with the incident.
One Ranjan Kand (51) and his wife Kaushalya Ghatual (45) of Lengtibari were coming to the weekly Haat at the Behalabari market on Thursday (Apr 6). As they reached the Khowai-Manik Bhander Road, a group of miscreants abducted Kaushalya in presence of her. As her husband, Ranjan Kand, tried to resist, miscreants thrashed him. Ranjan Kand could identify the abductors. He returned to his village and tried to find out his wife, in vain.
Later he informed the Behalabari Outpost about the incident in the evening – the Outpost, in turn, informed the Champahaor Police Station about the abduction.
After collecting the details of the kidnappers from Ranjan Kand, Police searched a manhunt and netted the accused eight persons. The detained accused persons were interrogated during which they confessed that they had killed the wife of Ranjan Kand and dumped her body in an abandoned toilet pit at Lengtibari.
Police personnel along with the accused persons reached the spot and recovered the body last night and sent it for post-mortem. Police arrested the eight accused in this connection and forwarded them to the local Court on Friday. The Court sent the accused persons to three-day Police remand.
The arrested persons are Charitra Kand (40), Mithun Kand (18), Akash Kand (18), Sanjit Kand (20), Bimal Kand (19), Ajit Kand (25) and Chandan Tanti (35).
The abduction and killing of Kaushalya occurred on the same day, within five hours after an agricultural supervisor in the neighbourhood of Subhash Park in Khowai was attacked and left seriously injured. The twin incidents in Khowai district have caused concern among the people, and they are calling for tough police action against the criminals to alleviate the fear and panic that has gripped their minds.
