Indo-Bangla trade through Tripura is expanding at a noticeable pace during the last three years and gradually, Tripura is emerging as a gateway to Southeast Asia.
Industry and Commerce minister Manoj Kanti Deb said while addressing a state-level seminar, titled Export Potential of Tripura and Exhibition in Agartala on Tuesday.
“Both the export and import businesses are making good progress and volume of trade is increasing noticeably during the period 2017-18 and 2020-21”, Deb said.
The seminar was organized as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, commemorating 75 years of India’s Independence.
Rubber Board under the Industries and Commerce Ministry jointly with the Directorate General of Foreign Trade in association with the State Government arranged the seminar. Besides, the State Industries and Commerce department started observing a ‘Trade Week’ from Monday. It will continue till September 26.
The theme of the seminar and the Vanijya Utsav was ‘Showcasing India as a Rising Economic Force’.
Inaugurating the seminar, the minister said a total of 5590 MT pineapples were exported from Tripura other States and foreign countries – and total Rs 7 crore 77 lakh revenue was earned.
Manoj Kanti Deb also said, the work of expanding trade with foreign countries is going in full swing and several steps have been taken for this.
“Tripura recorded over Rs. 733 crore import and export business with Bangladesh during the 2020-21 financial year which was over Rs. 390 crore during the 2017-18 financial year. Similarly the state recorded Rs. 16.39 crore in export business with Bangladesh during the 2020-21 financial year which was Rs. 6.46 crore during the 2017-18,” the Minister said.
Chairman of Tripura Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. – Tinku Roy taking part in the seminar had emphasized on the importance of exporting bamboo and rubber products to neighboring Bangladesh. He urged to take the issue of bringing rubber farmers under insurance coverage.
Assistant High Commissioner of Bangladesh at Agartala – Mohammad Jobayed Hossain, Additional DGFT of the Union Ministry of Industries and Commerce Vijay Kumar, Executive Director of the Central Government’s Rubber Board Dr. KN Raghavan, Secretary of the Department of Industry and Commerce PK Goel and Director Tarit Kanti Chakma remained present in the seminar.
