Miscreants demolished a Congress office which was scheduled to be inaugurated in the Arvind Nagar area under the Sepahijala District of Tripura on Friday afternoon, triggering unrest and tension. The incident occurred amidst preparations for the upcoming three-tier panchayat elections scheduled for August 8.
Local sources reported, a group of unidentified individuals attacked the Congress office in Arvind Nagar shortly before its formal inauguration of the congress Office and holding a joining programme today.
The miscreants not only dismantled the office but also assaulted several Congress workers present at the site.
Congress leader Jaydeep Roy Barman alleged that the attackers were affiliated with the ruling party and named Firdaus Mia, president of the Bishalgarh BJP Mandal Minority Morcha, and other BJP-backed individuals as the perpetrators.
The incident rapidly escalated, causing widespread panic and tension in the area. The Superintendent of Police for Sepahijala district, DJ Reddy, along with the Sub-Divisional Police Officer Dulal Dutta, and Officer-in-Charge of Bishalgarh police station Sanjit Sen, promptly arrived at the scene.
Local people, however, alleged police inaction and claimed miscreants were involved in putting houses of Congress on fire in front of the Police. Local also said, miscreants fled away after Congress activists resisted them.
Congress activists claimed the attack was linked to the party’s rising activities for upcoming panchayat elections. The party had organized a joining meeting and the inauguration of the new office in Arvind Nagar Gram Panchayat to galvanize support today and the attackers aimed at disrupting to proceedings to scare the Congress supporters, a group of agitated villagers claimed.
Congress leader Jaydeep Roy Barman accused the BJP of orchestrating the attack to intimidate Congress supporters and disrupt their activities. He further claimed that the attackers attempted to physically assault and humiliate the female Gram Pradhan of the Arvind Nagar Gram Panchayat, who had recently defected from the BJP to join Congress.
Moreover, the home of prominent Congress leader Titu Ahmed in the Ghaniyamara area was set ablaze by the miscreants, resulting in extensive property damage.
In contrast, BJP workers alleged that they were attacked by Congress supporters while traveling from Sonamura to Kamthana via Arvind Nagar. They reported that three BJP workers were seriously injured in the clash and had to be rushed to the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital. The injured were later transferred to GBP Hospital in Agartala for further treatment.
The attack has sparked outrage among Congress supporters and has heightened tensions in the Arvind Nagar area.
