Two labourers died at Udaipur area in Tripura while they were cleaning a septic tank on Sunday. The deceased labourers were Jahangir Hossain (38) and Haradhan Chakraborty (50). According to sources, a vegetable trader Haradhan Saha hired Jahangir and Haradhan to clean a septic tank at his residence Sonamura Chowmuhani under Udaipur in Tripura.
Accordingly, both the labourers went to the house of Haradhan Saha and stepped into the tank. According to sources, labourers were not using any safety gears before stepping inside the tank. Due to toxic fumes, they fainted and died of asphyxiation.
After a while, the house owner went near the tank to supervise the works. However, no one from inside the tank responded to his call. Later, the younger brother of Saha, Dipankar Saha lit a torchlight and found the labourers lying inside the septic tank unconscious. He attempted to step down the tank – however, he could not due to breath-choking toxic gases. Immediately, Police and Fire service personnel were informed. Soon, Fire Service personnel recovered both the labourers.
“It appears both the labourers fainted after inhaling toxic fumes in the septic tank”, Fire Service sources said. Both Jahangir and Haradhan Chakraborty were brought to Gomati District Hospital at Tepania where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead. Sources said, both of them died of asphyxiation.
