Inhabitants of several villages under Teliamura Forest Department in Tripura are spending sleepless nights due to rampaging wild elephants. Several initiatives have been taken to prevent wild elephant attacks – however, it seems all the efforts are turning out to be futile.
Almost every night, wild elephants are venturing into villages and destroying dwellings and crops. Despite vigilance by Anti Depredation Squad (ADS) and local volunteers, rampaging elephants are frequently attacking villages.
On Friday night, wild elephants ventured into DM Colony Para under Teliamura Forest Department. Elephants destroyed several houses and crops. However, due to the alertness of ADS and volunteers, local residents escaped from the attack.
Forest Department personnel also rushed to the spot. A delegation of the Forest Department also visited the village today. However, the value of the losses is yet to be estimated.
Locals have demanded a permanent solution to the elephant menace.
